2009 NEWS FROM THE CRAB GROUNDS & FLEET
THE LAST OF THE FV/KATMI
This something that most want to forget but those who was there and survived it will never forget which will haunt them for the rest of there lives.For four men they will probly ask the 3 why's.1)Why did it happen 2) Why did men have to die?? 3) Why is it my friends died and i survived.There was 11 crewmembers on the Katmi before it sank from the Capts account of the events was that the engineer came to him and said they were taking on water on the hull area and the pumps stopped working.when the pumps stopped pumping out the flood waters and the main engines stopped that pretty much set there fate then.The Capt ordered the crewmembers to suit up and the greenhorn Amman said when he was woke up he was at 45 degree's to port and he said he then new it was bad then the capt ordered the life rafts and about that time the engineering man went back down to the engine room to try and get the pumps working and that was the last they seen him.One raft had 6 and the other had 5 in it.The raft that had the capt and the 5 others were in one raft and there was 1 man that comprimised his survival suit to try and tie down the canopy as the capt said he new how important it was to get the canopy closed but before he did the waves tossed the raft over dumping the 6 mean into the frigid 40 degree water.There probly will be more to follow as time goes by.Here is a list of the survivors and the crewmembers who did not make it. The crewmember
who made it will have a astric by it and the crewmembers who did not survive will have a # by there name.
